Gainesville cadet color guard best in CAP

Cadets Dillon Willis, Tyler Gwynn, Justin Tuttle and MaryElizabeth Dowell took honors as the best cadet color guard in Civil Air Patrol in late June at the National Cadet Competition in Oregon. The cadets are members of Gainesville Composite Squadron in Florida Wing’s Group 2.

CLEARWATER, Fla., July 14, 2010: One of Civil Air Patrol’s seven best cadet color guards was recently named the organization’s best.
Cadets from Gainesville Composite Squadron, in Florida Wing’s Group 2, won the color guard portion of the National Cadet Competition in McMinnville, Oregon, in late June.
The U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Sweepstakes Award, given to the top color guard and to the top drill team in the two-part competition, went to a team led by Cadet Chief Master Sgt .Tyler Gwynn, 16, and including Cadet Senior Master Sgts. Justin Tuttle and Dillon Willis, both 16, and Cadet Master Sgt. MaryElizabeth Dowell, 17. Cadet Airman Moriah Tuttle, 12, was an alternate.
The cadets took top marks in several aspects of the competition, including first place in the mile run and second place in the written exam.
Willis took home the Fleet Foot award among color guard competitors.
Three escorts went to Oregon with the cadets – Lt. Col. Margarita Mesones, 2nd Lt. Donnie Tuttle and cadet sponsor Robin Gwynn.
The national event is broken down into two segments, for color guards and for drill teams. Florida Wing cadets won the top color guard honors in 2002, 2004 and 2005. The wing took the best drill team honor in 2008.
